Built on an open protocol

Bluesky runs on the AT Protocol, whose public interface serves posts with no authentication at all. Reading a public post is what the protocol is designed for, which is why this works without any credentials or agreements.

How the video is assembled

Bluesky serves video as a streaming playlist split into many segments rather than one file. Rather than handing that playlist to the media processor — which would let it fetch arbitrary addresses listed inside — we fetch every segment ourselves through the same protections that guard every other request, then stitch them together from local files. The processor never touches the network.

Full quality, not the preview

You get the highest available version rather than the compressed one shown in the timeline. For portrait video that means the full 720-pixel-wide rendition.
