How the presets differ

Best Quality keeps the resolution up to 1080p and uses a light compression level, so the result stays close to the original. Balanced caps the video at 720p and compresses harder, which is the sweet spot for sharing. Small File caps at 480p and compresses hardest, producing the smallest file at a visible but acceptable quality cost. All three output H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container, which every version of WhatsApp can play.

Why compatibility matters

The compressed file uses the H.264 baseline profile. That is an older, more conservative encoding mode which plays on low-end and ageing Android handsets, the devices most likely to struggle with a video sent over WhatsApp. A more efficient encoding would produce a slightly smaller file that some recipients could not open.

Sending long videos

Compression can only do so much for a long clip. A ten-minute video will still be large even at 480p. If the file remains too big, trimming it into shorter sections before compressing usually works better than compressing harder.

What is WhatsApp's video size limit?
WhatsApp caps ordinary media sharing at around 16 MB, and files sent as documents at up to 2 GB. The Balanced and Small File presets are aimed at getting a typical clip under the media limit so it sends as a normal video rather than a document.
Which preset should I choose?
Start with Balanced. It caps the video at 720p, which still looks sharp on a phone screen while cutting the file substantially. Use Small File when the clip is long or the connection is slow, and Best Quality when detail matters more than size.
Will compressing reduce the quality?
Yes, some quality is always lost when a video is re-encoded. The presets are tuned so the loss is hard to notice on a phone screen at normal viewing distance.
Why did my file barely get smaller?
If the video was already compressed — for example, one already sent through WhatsApp or exported from a phone editor — there is little redundancy left to remove. In that case a stronger preset helps, or your original may already be the best option.
Do you keep my video?
No. Your upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes, and the compressed file is removed automatically when its download link expires.
