Yes. Any instance that runs standard Mastodon and serves the post publicly will work, including small personal servers.

Can I download from a followers-only post?

No. Posts limited to followers, or sent as direct messages, require an authenticated session and are never accessible.

What about other fediverse software like Pleroma or Misskey?

Servers that implement the Mastodon-compatible API and use the same link format will often work. Those with a different structure will not be recognised.

Do you store the videos I download?

No. Files are processed temporarily and deleted automatically once the download link expires, normally within 15 to 30 minutes. Nothing is kept in a permanent library.

Why this one actually works

Mastodon publishes a documented API that serves public posts without any authentication, and it returns a direct link to the original media file. There is no signed token to defeat and no private endpoint to imitate — we are using the interface Mastodon built for exactly this. That is precisely why it is switched on when several larger platforms are not.

Any instance, not just mastodon.social

The fediverse is thousands of independent servers. Rather than keeping a list, we recognise Mastodon posts by their link shape, so an instance we have never seen works the same as the largest one.

A post can carry up to four attachments. We process the first one, which is the item the link preview shows.
